How I actually use AI to plan my trips

The Traveling Moore

Hey Reader,

I’ve been getting a lot of questions lately about using AI to plan travel, so I wanted to share my honest take and how I actually use it when I’m planning a trip.

Here’s the short version: I don’t think AI is very good at planning trips from scratch.

I’ve tried asking ChatGPT for things to do, restaurants to try, or full itineraries, and I’ve run into a few issues:

  • It’s recommended restaurants that are closed
  • It’s suggested generic or chain spots I’d never go out of my way for
  • The itineraries often feel disconnected or unrealistic for how people actually travel

When I’m deciding what to do on a trip, I still strongly prefer blogs, YouTube, and TikTok. I want to know what real people did, what they loved, what they skipped, and what they’d do differently. That kind of context just isn’t something AI does well yet.

Where AI does shine for me is once I’ve already done my research.

My actual travel planning flow looks like this:

  1. I research blogs, YouTube videos, and TikToks
  2. I keep a running note on my phone with sights, restaurants, neighborhoods, and tours I’m interested in
  3. Once that list is done, then I use ChatGPT to help organize it into a logical daily plan

This is the part AI is really good at—turning a messy list into a clean, efficient schedule.

Here’s a prompt you can copy and use that works really well for me:

Hi ChatGPT. Please create a [number]-day itinerary for [city]. Below is a list of places, restaurants, neighborhoods, and activities I’m interested in. Please organize them into a logical and efficient daily schedule, grouping nearby locations together so I minimize travel time. Include guidance on how to get between stops and suggest optional nearby activities or neighborhoods if I end up with extra time in the day. Do not replace items on my list unless absolutely necessary.

I’ve found this saves me so much time and mental energy—especially for cities where logistics matter just as much as what you see.

If you’re curious how I plan specific trips, this is exactly the process I use for destinations like Tokyo, Chicago, Maui, and Europe. Blogs first. AI second. Never the other way around.

If you’ve tried using AI for travel planning, I’d love to hear what’s worked (or totally failed) for you—just hit reply and tell me.

Have a great week!

Lauren

The Traveling Moore Hey Reader, I’m back from Maui and it was one of those trips that reminded me exactly why I love that island so much. It was my friend’s first time in Maui, which made it even more special. There is something so fun about showing someone a place that means a lot to you and watching them fall in love with it in real time. We built a 5-day itinerary that mixed adventure, relaxation, and good food. And yes, we booked every hotel on Hyatt points. Here’s exactly what we did....

The Traveling Moore Hey friend, With my birthday this week, I’ve been feeling extra reflective. This year feels a little different because it’s my last year in my 20s, and when I look back, so many of the moments that defined this decade for me are tied to travel. Not just where I went, but who I was with and what season of life I was in. Here are a few of the trips that really shaped my 20s. Bucket list trips I’ll never forget Visiting Antarctica and checking off my 7th continent Hiking to...

The Traveling Moore Hey Reader, I want to share something new I’ve been working on that you might not know about yet. I recently started a separate TikTok account called Lauren the Foodie. It’s a slightly different niche than the blog, but it actually fits really naturally with how I travel. When I’m on a trip, food is always a huge part of the experience. I’m constantly trying restaurants, bakeries, coffee shops, and random finds that don’t always make sense in a full blog post but are...
